Lee Sharkey

Come June

As in, at the same time as chaos descended to the vessel

As in, when you side with the impulse you can go on

As in, what releases joy in the watcher

As in leaf cry

As in, pelican stills to a statue

As with, child untethered from his father

As in, those who came from the far side of the river

As in, he can’t go forward so he can’t go home

As, draw a box around anyone, she becomes a prisoner

As in, what remains when you confiscate a camera

As when she sets out to explore the walls of her confinement

As in a moth like a corner torn from an ivory silk kerchief

As in, do not disturb the white-headed dragonfly

As in the lapsed horizon

As, when wings flap furiously they become more light than substance

As in, not in your past, not in the past, nor in the pointillist present slapping the skylight

As in, meanwhile, let’s get clean. At least we can do that. At least we can do that

As in, and if this were the last summer

As in, come evening the watcher will ask a question

As in, he will be waiting in skirts at the crossroad

As in, then the dead will glower with phosphorus

As in the sadness of things

As in, at night, what the barred owls volley

As in, damselflies lock in a wheel for mating

As when a fledgling offers its scarlet gullet

As in, if the sea made a home for the missing passengers

As in lace-veiled wings and a fur-wrapped thorax

As, if it inscribed their names in oil

As in, mantle her with your wing

Turn it, and turn it, everything is in it

As in, shame, shanda

As in, time is a system of absences

As in, he covered all available scraps of paper with the tiny birds of his beautiful handwriting

As in, from where to where, my shadow, do you reach

As in, the flowers are animate, the animals bear intentions

As in, they crossed the river without a word for execute

As in, we had no house like the others
